ABENA Group, an international manufacturer of healthcare products, has developed a digital incontinence product called ABENA Nova. The product is designed to provide a better quality of life for both incontinence product users and healthcare professionals.
The ABENA incontinence diaper is no ordinary diaper. It features sensors and a small clip that transfers data via Bluetooth and 4G networks to the WetSens Monitor app, which is installed on the caregivers’ mobile devices. Caregivers can easily and quickly monitor the diaper’s moisture status and be notified if it needs changing. The product saves resources and minimizes user discomfort. In addition, caregivers can also use the data collected to monitor the users’ fluid levels. However, the innovative product could not be manufactured at the ABENA production facilities, which led the company to seek a skilled engineering consulting partner to assist in completing the necessary upgrades.
ABENA needed to create a reliable, user-friendly, and standard-based manufacturing system that could handle incontinence products of different sizes and types. The ABENA production facilities required a comprehensive upgrade with new technology based on analysis, concept studies and the development of mechanics, automation, and testing and quality control.
ABENA contacted DIS/CREADIS for assistance. After conducting analysis and evaluating various options, it was decided to develop and expand ABENA's production facilities with a semi-automatic solution – a so-called round table machine – that could easily take over from the large production lines via manual operation and adapt the product to sensor technology and quality control. DIS/CREADIS was chosen to contribute to concept development and implementation of automation, mechanics, vision technology, and quality control.
The ABENA Nova product has already become a success in both the private and public healthcare sectors in Denmark and the Netherlands and other European markets. The digital solution now contributes to a better quality of life for users and an optimized use of resources. Without the upgrades to the facility and automated production systems, ABENA would not have been able to produce this groundbreaking new device.
DIS/CREADIS was chosen to contribute to concept development and implementation of automation, mechanics, vision technology, and quality control. In addition, the ABENA Group also chose to use DIS/CREADIS as a turnkey supplier so that the new production facility was developed, built, tested, and approved by DIS/CREADIS, and then installed and commissioned by DIS/CREADIS technicians on site at ABENA.
