DANFOSS – ENGINEERING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR DEGREASING

Danfoss is a global leader in providing engineering solutions and technologies. They are committed to delivering innovative, energy-efficient, and sustainable products. The company operates in several industries, including heating, cooling, refrigeration, and industrial automation.

Challenges

Danfoss was experiencing premature paint failure of their valve stack. They also needed to improve their surface degreasing and conversion processes, which would support better paint adhesion and corrosion protection. Additionally, they requested recommendations on a low emission paint system. Danfoss needed an engineering solution provider that could consult and deliver on the three objectives above.

Solution

Danfoss chose DIS/CREADIS to assist in developing a comprehensive solution to address the paint, grease, and corrosion challenges. DIS/CREADIS recommended replacing the current surface degreaser with a Ni-free alkaline degreaser or dry ice and replacing the iron phosphating with an eco-friendly surface conversion treatment. We also recommended replacing the solvent-based paint system with low VOC, corrosion-resistant systems and suggested a water-based paint system to replace the Danfoss-specific paints.

Benefits

The DIS/CREADIS solution resulted in a wide range of benefits. The new surface degreaser and conversion treatment improved corrosion resistance, resulting in longer-lasting paint adhesion and a longer service life for the valve stack. The new low VOC, corrosion-resistant paint system reduced emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly solution. Additionally, the water-based paint system replaced the Danfoss-specific paints, eliminating the need for a wastewater treatment step, which had a positive EHS impact.

The solution also reduced the number of process steps required, resulting in a streamlined process and faster processing times. This led to a reduction in product claims and rework, which improved quality assurance outcomes.
