HWAM, a wood-burning stove company founded in 1973, has been dedicated to creating modern, user-friendly, high-performing, and well-designed wood-burning stoves. In recent years, the company has shifted its focus towards making stoves that are more environmentally friendly and easier to use. To achieve this gal, HWAM has worked with IHS Innovation to develop a new system called IHS (Intelligent Heat System).
The main challenge that HWAM faced was to create a more user-friendly, environmentally friendly, and efficient wood-burning stove. They wanted to develop a system that would regulate the temperature and the amount of oxygen in the stove and communicate this information to the user in real time. Additionally, they wanted to create an app that could collect data from the stove and the remote control and provide users with relevant information, such as when to add more wood, optimal combustion, and room temperature regulation.
HWAM partnered with IHS Innovation to develop the IHS. The IHS is a device that is integrated into the stove and regulates the temperature and amount of oxygen in the stove. The system works with a remote control that acts as a thermostat and can define the desired room temperature. The IHS has been updated and further developed by DIS/CREADIS, who created a cross-platform application that can be downloaded onto a mobile device with an IOS or Android operating system. The app collects data from the device and the remote control and communicates relevant information to the stove user. Additionally, the app ensures a reduced use of firewood and the optimum use of firewood, ultimately protecting the environment against hazardous gases, particles, and smoke.
HWAM chose to work with DIS/CREADIS because of their strong mechanics, hardware and software skills, knowledge of IoT (Internet of Things), app development, and electronic control. They found all these skills in one place at DIS/CREADIS. Additionally, the DIS/CREADIS team’s knowledge and competencies were a significant advantage for HWAM. DIS/CREADIS and HWAM have previously worked together on several projects, and the process and cooperation have worked perfectly.
“During the project we received weekly updates of the progress, where DIS/CREADIS visited our department in Aarhus. These meetings added great value and provided us with a sense of security, and we created a very close relation between us and DIS/CREADIS,” said Brian Staal, project manager at HWAM/HIS Innovation.
