TIB Molbiol – ACCELERATING COVID-19 TESTING: TIB MOLBIOL TEAMS UP WITH DIS/CREADIS TO DEVELOP AUTOMATED PCR TEST MACHINE WITH RESULTS IN LESS THAN ONE HOUR

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, governments worldwide have invested enormous resources in scaling up their testing capacity. PCR testing is the most reliable test method, but it can take several hours to a few days to deliver test results, leaving a window in which infection may spread. Olfert Landt, CEO of TIB Molbiol, identified the need for a shorter lead time and came up with the idea to develop a continuous PCR test machine. Samples are not moved through the testing process in batches as is normally done, but one by one, reducing the total testing time significantly.

Challenges

To develop an automated machine that can evaluate the tests, TIB Molbiol needed a technology partner who could help them face, several challenges, including a tight time schedule, lack of access to equipment, and ability to perform precise project work with robotics, chemicals, and small components.

Solution

After figuring out an overall concept for the realization of the project, technology reviews, and parameter studies, DIS/CREADIS and TIB Molbiol collaborated to develop an automated PCR test machine that delivers test results in less than one hour. The machine has a total output of 60 tests per hour and machine. The automated testing combined with the gargling test method promised to bring real progress in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The solution not only reduced the demand for trained personnel but also brought advantages in availability and price. Unlike tests relying on a specific cartridge, this solution required fewer and much more general, expendable items. The recurring costs per test are, therefore, significantly lower, and availability is easier to ensure. With these characteristics and the mobility of the solution, many new use cases like on-site testing for public events become conceivable, and returning to a normal life comes closer.

FACTS

  • Test sensitivity: ≈ 100%
  • Test specificity: ≈ 100%
  • Throughput: 60 tests/hour
  • Lead time: 60 minutes

Why DIS/CREADIS

The collaboration of an agile automation expert like DIS/CREADIS and a science company with deep knowledge in molecular biology and PCR testing such as TIB Molbiol made the project a success. DIS/CREADIS project manager Jannick Schulte praised the collaboration and outcome, saying, “The past couple of months have been extremely focused and exciting. Regardless of the many challenges, everything has been solved state-of-the-art thanks to innovative thinking and pragmatic solutions. All in all, it has been an experience of coming together as tech partners with a project goal and finding solutions that can make a true difference.

GROULEFF DK – PRECISION AND INNOVATION IN MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

Grouleff DK specializes in developing and producing medical equipment and was tasked with delivering a specially designed chair and bed for a MEG (magnetoencephalography) scanner. A MEG scanner maps the magnetic signals of a brain and requires a stable and uninterrupted scan to produce accurate images. Grouleff DK was approached by an English customer to create a chair and a bed in anti-magnetic materials with fine-mechanical solutions to fit their customer’s MEG scanner precisely. As this was the first time Grouleff DK had created a chair and a bed for a MEG scanner, they required external resources to complete the task and turned to DIS/CREADIS for assistance.

ADVALIGHT – REVITALIZING MEDICAL LASER TECHNOLOGY

Advalight is a Danish company that specializes in the development and manufacturing of medical laser devices. The company was established as a research project at DTU (Technical University of Denmark) 10 years ago, with a focus on laser sources. Since then, Advalight has grown into a company that produces laser devices for treating skin diseases and skin disorders such as chronic redness, spider veins, scars, moles, and acne. Advalight’s medical laser devices use yellow (589nm) and infrared (1319nm) laser lights, which are more effective in treating skin problems compared to other lasers. Advalight’s laser is built on solids (crystals) instead of on gas or coloring, which makes it less expensive, more reliable, and more stable than other medical yellow lasers on the market.

ABENA– ADVANCING INCONTINENCE CARE

ABENA Group, an international manufacturer of healthcare products, has developed a digital incontinence product called ABENA Nova. The product is designed to provide a better quality of life for both incontinence product users and healthcare professionals. The ABENA incontinence diaper is no ordinary diaper. It features sensors and a small clip that transfers data via Bluetooth and 4G networks to the WetSens Monitor app, which is installed on the caregivers’ mobile devices. Caregivers can easily and quickly monitor the diaper’s moisture status and be notified if it needs changing. The product saves resources and minimizes user discomfort. In addition, caregivers can also use the data collected to monitor the users’ fluid levels. However, the innovative product could not be manufactured at the ABENA production facilities, which led the company to seek a skilled engineering consulting partner to assist in completing the necessary upgrades.
