Strength in collaboration: DIS/CREADIS helps ensure anchor point safety for wind turbine blade service platforms

PP Techniq A/S specializes in providing technical solutions for wind turbine blade repair and maintenance. They offer advanced blade access platforms which are safe, flexible, and easy to operate. The SQYFlex™ is their newly developed blade access platform.

The platform can be raised up and down and adapts to the shape of the blade giving full access and alleviating the need to remove the blade for service. PP Techniq recently implemented an anchor point on their service platform, allowing them to replace personnel, equipment, and materials on the platform while it is attached to the wind turbine blade. This solution saves time by avoiding the process of lowering the platform down to the base and returning it to the blade when replacing personnel.

Challenges

PP Techniq needed to verify the anchor point solution for their service platforms to ensure that it meets the required standards. They did not have the necessary competencies in their organization to perform the strength calculations required for the anchor point. They needed to find a partner who could provide the necessary expertise to perform the calculations.

Solution

PP Techniq contacted DIS/CREADIS for support with the anchor point strength calculations. DIS/CREADIS has a team of experienced engineers with specialized competencies in structural calculations, mechanical design, electrical design, functional safety, and project management.

DIS/CREADIS performed a stress analysis of the entire platform and evaluated high-load areas through analytical calculations. They compared the results of their calculations with the required standards, DS/EN 795:2012 and Eurocode 3 and 9 and provided input to PP Techniq’s design based on their calculations. The calculations formed the basis for weight optimization of the platform, resulting in a reduction in work hours. Replacing personnel, equipment, and materials used to take 45 minutes, but now it takes only 10 minutes.
