The company produces instruments and dental implants for dentists worldwide and has been operating for over 130 years. To continue to provide high-quality products and remain competitive in the industry, Dentsply Sirona needed to update and automate their production process.
Challenges
Dentsply Sirona used an old system for welding small components in the production process, which needed to be updated and automated so that the position where the welding was done could be registered and adjusted. Before the new vision system was implemented, locating the welding point had to be done manually based on a live feed from a camera. This process was time-consuming and inefficient. Additionally, Dentsply Sirona didn’t have the necessary skills for programming in the computer vision software Halcon, which was required for the development of the new vision system.
Solution
Dentsply Sirona turned to DIS/CREADIS, for the development of a vision application able to interface with the customer’s system and prepare the required documentation. The vision system automated the production process of dental implants, making it more efficient and accurate.
DIS/CREADIS developed software that simplifies the process by allowing a vision system to calculate the offset automatically. The inputs to the vision system are images from which the system automatically detects the welding point and sends an (x-y)-offset coordinate to the welding program, which proceeds to weld the components at the correct welding point. The vision system also allowed for two different systems with different cameras to interact seamlessly.
