FLSmidth is an international supplier to the cement industry, and they have been using the OK™ Mill as their standard mill since 1993. However, with the passage of time, they realized the need for an improved and advanced version of the mill to meet the increasing demands of the cement industry. The company initiated a development project to create a new generation of the OK™ Mill. The project included modeling, standardization, cost optimization, and technical improvement of the mill.
The development project for the new version of the OK™ Mill was complex, and FLSmidth faced several challenges. One of the significant issues was the need for parametric modeling, a process in which they lack sufficient expertise. They faced the challenge of designing components using parametric modeling in SolidWorks for design automation. The project also involved developing the OK™ Mill in three sizes, which increased the projects’ complexity, while the sheer size of FLSmidth's products made transport difficult – for example the rollers for the mills are approximately two meters in diameter and weigh about 30 tons.
FLSmidth partnered with DIS/CREADIS to help overcome the challenges. DIS/CREADIS assigned a specialist engineer to work with FLSmidth on a daily basis, assisting in the design of components using parametric modeling in SolidWorks for design automation. The partnership with DIS/CREADIS enabled FLSmidth to gain solid knowledge of how to make models in SolidWorks. DIS/CREADIS also provided expertise in the further development of equipment for special transport, which was necessary due to the large size of FLSmidth's products.
By standardizing the various mills, FLSmidth was able to offer their customers a machine at a competitive price and fast delivery. Jens Mose, Department Manager at FLSmidth, commented on the partnership, saying, "One of the great advantages of external expertise has been that we have gained a solid knowledge of how to make models in SolidWorks, something we did not have sufficiently prior to the project."
DIS/CREADIS team of experts is able to quickly deploy knowledge in various areas, including electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, which made the company a suitable match to FLSmidth’s needs. The team is equipped to handle complex engineering projects and has the necessary skills to provide solutions for challenging problems, as well as experience in project management and working with international companies.
