Grouleff DK specializes in developing and producing medical equipment and was tasked with delivering a specially designed chair and bed for a MEG (magnetoencephalography) scanner.
A MEG scanner maps the magnetic signals of a brain and requires a stable and uninterrupted scan to produce accurate images. Grouleff DK was approached by an English customer to create a chair and a bed in anti-magnetic materials with fine-mechanical solutions to fit their customer’s MEG scanner precisely. As this was the first time Grouleff DK had created a chair and a bed for a MEG scanner, they required external resources to complete the task and turned to DIS/CREADIS for assistance.
Challenges
The requirement specifications for the chair and bed were considerable. The products needed to be designed with the option to fine-adjust the patient down to the nearest millimeter to ensure the correct position in the brain scanner. Additionally, the equipment had to be designed in 100 percent anti-magnetic materials without any electronic parts that could interfere with the scanning process. The weight of the chair and bed had to be minimized while ensuring stability, and the equipment had to be easily maneuverable in tight spaces. All these challenges required expertise in fine-mechanical solutions and anti-magnetic materials.
Solution
Grouleff DK collaborated with DIS/CREADIS to develop and construct the first prototype of the bed and chair. The team at DIS/CREADIS provided project management, statistical and hydraulic calculations, and assistance with the purchase of custom-designed parts. They also conducted product testing. To ensure the stability of the equipment, DIS/CREADIS used aluminum and acid-proof stainless steel to avoid magnetic materials. A newly developed fine-mechanical solution was used to lift and lower the patient using hydraulics controlled by a foot pump. The chair has more adjustment options, where fine tuning is done using cone-shaped gears and handwheels. The bed has an active docking system safely ensuring the patient’s position relative to the scanner as well as a braking system that locks all four wheels by activating one of the wheels.
How we collaborate
>>
With their experience in designing and optimizing products for a variety of industries, DIS/CREADIS was able to help Grouleff DK overcome the fine-mechanical and anti-magnetic materials challenges presented by this project. DIS/CREADIS also provided a global perspective on product design, ensuring that the final products were optimized for manufacturing, cost-effective, and met the needs of the customer.
