Topsoe

Accelerating time to market for innovative power-to-x technology

Topsoe – a leading global developer and supplier of decarbonization technology, catalysts, and services for the energy transition – has partnered with CREADIS to bring the latest innovation in renewable energy technology to market, faster.

Challenges

Whilst developing their new electrolyzer technology, Topsoe set the equally ambitious goal of building the world’s biggest and most advanced electrolyzer manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark.

Developing Topsoe’s SOEC manufacturing facility is an ambitious undertaking in its own right! The 72,000 square meter facility had to be built in just two and a half years in-order to open in time for 2025. The facility would need to deliver an annual electrolyzer production capacity of 500 MW, but be capable of scaling production to 5 GW as the technology matures and demand increases.

With their advanced SOEC electrolyzer still under development, Topsoe needed to find an experienced partner capable of delivering a highly competent and scalable workforce to develop their manufacturing facility in parallel with ongoing R&D efforts. With the teams working in parallel, Topsoe & CREADIS would be able to begin large scale production of Topsoe SOEC Electrolyzers as soon as the product was finalized.

Topsoe and CREADIS are experienced partners, having collaborated previously on the development of a 15,000-ton hydro-processing catalyst factory. Choosing CREADIS as their strategic partner for this ambitious project was a natural choice.

Solution

In close collaboration with Topsoe’s staff, CREADIS has delivered end-to-end solutions that include EPCm services such as:

  • Full engineering organization, leading the development of component selection and requirement specifications
  • System integration, including the design and internal layout of the factory.
  • Process and P&ID development, including Process Safety.
  • Development of electrical installations, automation, MES and instrumentation.
  • Design and verification of structural components and piping systems.

Benefits

The approach for this ambitious project needed to be flexible and cost-efficient in order to keep pace with the development of Topsoe’s new electrolyzer technology. CREADIS ensured this by continuously assessing the workforce size and competencies needed. As the project progressed, CREADIS allocated approximately 80 experienced engineers and project managers. Being able to deliver staff with the skills and competencies in this scalable format enabled Topsoe to optimize and scale their own organizational needs all while minimizing costs.

Thanks to their partnership with CREADIS, Topsoe are now well on their way to bringing their innovative SOEC electrolyzer technology to market in record time.
