Vattenfall

Electrical and mechanical design services for 113 offshore wind turbine foundations

Vattenfall is an energy company that focuses on electricity and heat production from various sources, such as wind, hydro, and nuclear power. It is one of the leading European energy companies, with operations in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, among other countries. Vattenfall has been building offshore wind farms in Denmark since 1991 when it became the first country to do so.

Challenges

Vattenfall needed to find a consulting company to provide electrical design for 113 foundations for their next three offshore wind farms in Denmark: Vesterhav Nord, Vesterhav Syd, and Kriegers Flak. Vattenfall decided that an engineering consulting firm would be responsible for developing panel design and specifications, cable lists, complete electrical schematic and wiring diagrams, illumination analysis, lightning report of LPZ-zones of the design, design and specification of overvoltage protection, short-circuit calculations, cable routing, and cable cross-section drawings, as well as earthing and bonding design.

Solution

Vattenfall received offers from five different consulting companies with existing framework agreements. However, DIS/CREADIS was awarded the project due to its high score in qualifications and reference projects. The electrical and automation department at DIS/CREADIS was responsible for the electrical design, while the mechanical department designed the mounting brackets, 3D designs of electrical panels, installation layouts for plug connections, and layout drawings of the electrical equipment installed in the foundations. DIS/CREADIS also provided Vattenfall with information and calculations for the tender materials when Vattenfall submitted and subsequently won the project for the three offshore wind farms.

How we collaborate

>>

Vattenfall chose DIS/CREADIS as the consulting company for this project because of their high competence within electrical systems and their previous successful collaborations.

We have experienced a very successful collaboration. We did not feel we worked with an external partner on this task. This was largely due to the close cooperation between Vattenfall’s Electrical Design Manager and the DIS/CREADIS project organization, who performed the tasks. DIS/CREADIS understood how major projects are run and that as a consultant you must be very flexible when planning tasks. Despite changes to both schedules and the design assumptions, they demonstrated great professionalism in terms of quality and project management”, concludes Nilas Mandrup Hansen, Head of Design Management at Vattenfall.

The three new offshore wind farms in Denmark are expected to provide electricity to nearly one million households.
