Vestas faced the challenge of updating five modules in its wind turbines that were using obsolete components. Vestas required that the new modules be compatible with spare parts and fit into existing models while also reducing costs. Additionally, the requirement specification was outdated, posing further challenges for the project.
Solution
To overcome the challenges, Vestas partnered with DIS/CREADIS to provide a comprehensive solution. The team designed and developed new components with EOL, RoHS, and UL certifications, ensuring a longevity of 15 years. The hardware and software were also designed specifically for spare part applications, and component and design reuse were incorporated. Additionally, a well-defined requirement specification was developed, ensuring form, fit, and function.

The solution provided significant benefits to Vestas. The longer lifetime of the new components resulted in cost reduction, and the same module could be used as a spare part, eliminating the need for mechanical updates. Documented requirements, tests, and validation ensured quality and reduced risk, while the global team approach provided cost optimization.
